Carrowmore in Sligo for teenagers

The Place:

Nestled between Knocknarea mountain and Union forest, 3 km from Sligo city (pop.25,000), on the Atlantic coast of Ireland sits Carrowmore, site of one of the oldest collections of Megalithic tombs and burial chambers, some dating to 3500 B.C. This area is said to be the first site settled by man in Ireland. This beautiful corner of Ireland is not only home to prehistoric tombs but also to Irelands foremost equestrian facility.

It's success and popularity among guests and local riders alike is due to the excellent facilities, good instructors, safe and well trained horses, friendly staff, but mainly to it's beautiful and diverse riding terrain.

From the endless Atlantic beaches for galloping to the mountains and pine forests for gentle hacking, this truly is the horseman paradise.

The vacations are personally organized by you host, and the owner of the facility, Declan Mc Garry, Irish Equestrian team member.

The director and owner is Mr. Declan Mc Garry B.H.S.A.I. I.C.E.S. Mr. Mc Garry is a former European Show jumping Silver Medallist and a member of the Irish equestrian team for many years.

Equestrian manager:

Miss.Grainne Mc Garry B.H.S.I.I.. is the manager of the equestrian centre.

The Horses:

Altogether at the centre there are in excess of 60 horses. The majority are either Irish Hunters or Connemara ponies.

The courses:

At the centre we offer courses for all levels of riding ability and all equestrian interests i.e. Basic Instruction, Show jumping instruction, Trekking holidays and Trail Rides

They also offer special horse riding and English Language courses for young Students.

Intensive Jumping Programme & English Language:

This programme is for good riders,who have a high level of riding.Their lessons will be in small groups,on high level horses,under the personal direction of Mr. Declan Mc Garry.Riders will have indoor/outdoor lesson in jumping.There is also cross country jumping and some outdoor riding in the countryside and beaches.

Host families staying:

These families are the same from about 10 years, very well organized and keep about 2 kids each week.

Every morning and every evening a school bus will take the kids to the Riding centre, as well as for evening happenings. Their location is in Sligo Village and in Strandhill Village, and about 2 weeks before arrival you will be advised about which is your host family.

The Key Institute:

The Key Institute, suggested teenagers, accepts maximum 20 students weekly divided into 3 classes, depending on their English level. Female will stay all together , male will stay at mt 100 just outside the Centre, all together

The Key Institute offers 3 different classes, depending on English level.

The English course:

The students will be divided into 3 classes, for 3 hours lessons daily, 5 days a week, from Monday to Friday included.

The courses include grammar lessons, vocabulary, hearing and reading books, conversation. All teachers are T.E.F.L. qualified and approved by Irish Government Education Dpt.

Riding lessons:

All students will be divided into 3 groups, 3 hours daily 6 days a week; indoor and outdoor riding, competitions, cross country, show jumping, tracks in the forest, on mountains and to the Atlantic beach. They will also help in stable management, grooming, cleaning tack and general yard duties.

Extra activities:

Five evenings up to 7 students can enjoy evening activities, under adult overlooking to go to the Cinema, to disco-bar, at bar-b.que or surfing.
The other 2 evenings will be spent with host family watching Video, TV or reading a book.


Return transfers are included from/to Dublin Airport; every Sunday from 09.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. at meeting point of Dublin Airport students can find the Carrowmore driver to go to the Centre; . the trip lasts about 3 hours time.

Typical day:

h. 08.30 a.m. after breakfast transfer to Key Institute for whom stay in host families
h. 09.30 a.m. 3 hours English lessons
h. 12.30 a.m. pic-nic lunch at Club house.
h. 02.00 p.m. 3 hours riding lessons
h. 05.30 p.m. transfer back to host family for dinner
h. 07.30 p.m. transfer and meeting with all other students for evening activities.
h. 10.00 p.m. transfer back and overnight.

The price includes::

- return transfers from-to Dublin airport
- overnights in host family in two bedded rooms ensuite
- all meals; breakfast, dinners and pic-nic lunches
- 18 hours riding per week
- 15 hours of English lessons per week
- 5 evening activities with all other students
- all local transportation
- admission fee including accident, medical and baggage insurance,

The fee do not include:

- Flights from and to your Country (upon request, we can book your tickets at the best available price).


- Staying at Key Institute, inside the Riding Centre, extra cost of € 75,00 per week.
Key Institute is open from June 17 till August 26.
