Co Galway for teenagers

The riding centre:

If your teenager is too young to work, and too old to be in a crèche, we invite you to send your him or her to our special summer camp. During the week-long camp all teenage guests help to catch horses and ponies, tack up, groom and generally take care of a horse for the week. Cobs (small horses), ponies and some horses are used for cross country instruction and one or two show jumping lessons. The gang has great sport and they are all engaged in healthy outdoor activities.

In Co. Galway we offer a program for unaccompanied kids really funny and interesting, to whom we just ask confidence in trot and gallop; it is not necessary Cross Country experience. They will improve their riding level, and the stable management.

This riding centre is based in 250 acres of beautiful east Galway country side. We are surrounded by the best possible cross country horse riding land - green fields, woods, the Kilcrow river, and wonderful wildlife. You can gallop across open fields, swim through the lake and splash in the Kilcrow river, scaring away the fish as you go.

Ride with us by the hour, a full day of 2 or 3 rides per day, or stay with us and chill out for a week or more. Rides usually go out daily at 10.00am and 1.30pm, and we change the rides to suit our customer needs. Horse riding variations include show jumping and dressage tuition, cross country workshops, exercising the hounds and hacking down to the local pub, where there are stabling facilities while we enjoy a pint and toasted sandwich. Private cross country or show jumping clinics for an individual rider can also be arranged.

The fences and riding experience required

Our fences are a mixture of natural logs, stone walls, ditches and a variety of man-made obstacles, including giant bananas! Most of the 150 fences include 2 or more options, so whether you are a nervous novice or confident competitor, we will cater for your needs. Take a look at our fences gallery for a sample of some of the fences. The riding standard varies from novice cross Country, through intermediate, right up to advanced open. All riders need to be confident at walk trot and canter, therefore this riding centre is not for the absolute beginner.

The Horses

We have over 45 active working horses who are a cross between the solid and sensible Irish Draught and the thoroughbred. This results in a sport horse with great jumping ability, common sense and courage. All our horses are cross country and hunting veterans, who will take good care of you during your stay. We take particular care to match the rider with the horse best suited to him or her, so that you will feel comfortable and safe while having fun during your horse riding holiday. Oliver, a former field master with the East Galway Hunt, and currently huntsman with the Co Roscommon hunt, accompanies most of the rides and provides words of encouragement and advice to all riders.

What to wear

All riders must wear a securely fitted riding helmet and you are encouraged to also wear a body protector. Please wear comfortable stretch pants, or jodhphurs, and short boots with a heel with riding chaps, or long boots. A light rain proof jacket is also a good idea in the summertime as we get an occasional rain shower.

You are very welcome to bring your own horse to school around our cross country course. Please call in advance to arrange suitable times. From 18 to 20 hours weekly, with special training for beginners and for advanced level.
